INDOOR – ongoing series

en:
While in Mario Kiesenhofers OUTDOOR works, the paths and routes address homosexuals finding unmarked outdoor locations, for his INDOOR works it is the gay clubs and bars that lend a voice to those concealed from public view — offering them-selves and withdrawing. These zones of transition – passageways between the locations and taboos — are the motifs of the INDOOR series. The artist Mario Kiesenhofer visited the appropriate gay clubs and bars in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Budapest, Tokyo and Vienna to introduce the demarcations between intimacy and the public realm, to lend them expression in order to also take the discussion on political mechanism of bodily repression to the actual locations in the public spotlight. The issue goes beyond the basic documentary evidence that has led to the worldwide institutionalisation of these underground meeting places, to address the challenge of conserving their semi-public character.

The framed photographs are displayed behind grey toned smoked glass, and only permit a filtered view into the spaces. They take abstract characteristics as their motifs, an imaginary moment to accompany the visible moment, a suggestion of masking with the promise of something behind it, a piece of space that already carries the next space within it, a development into the clandestine announcing itself in advance. In this, they have a relationship with the terms used to evoke the particular code of conduct for the club or bar concerned: LEATHER, RUBBER, JEANS, UNIFORM, NAKED etc., the semi-public codewords that call by name what is openly concealed behind them.
